Ep. 37 – The Unquiet Professional: Fostering Growth and Healing with Krista Simpson Anderson
As the wife of a Retired Green Beret Master Sergeant and a gold star spouse, Krista intimately understands the hardships and loss that military families can experience. After the death of her husband in 2013, she co-founded The Unquiet Professional, using her grief as a catalyst to make a difference in the lives of others navigating similar experiences.
The Unquiet Professional has been recognized for its impactful programs and services. From personal and professional development opportunities for military spouses to casualty support, the organization offers a comprehensive range of resources to service members and their families.
The Unquiet Professional doesn't just support military families in crisis. It proactively equips them with knowledge and tools, promoting family and financial readiness as a cornerstone of a stronger military force. One of Krista’s main philosophies is "arm yourselves and be brave", which translates to empowering military families to be prepared and resilient, rather than merely surviving their circumstances.
Krista also emphasizes the importance of community in the healing process. The Unquiet Professional provides a platform for military families to connect with each other and share their experiences, fostering a supportive and understanding environment. This sense of community is a crucial element in their journey towards healing and growth.
Krista then delves into the importance of strategic alliances in the success of The Unquiet Professional. She talks about several partnerships that she has cultivated with organizations that align with her mission of empowering military families.
One of these is the collaboration with We Are the Mighty Military Families Magazine, which provides a platform for military families to share their experiences and struggles. Another partnership mentioned is with Relentlessly Resilient, a podcast that features stories of individuals who have faced adversity and found resilience. Through these partnerships, Krista has been able to share the stories of military families with a wider audience, bringing more visibility to their unique challenges and triumphs.
After prompting from Tom, Krista discusses the Virtual Memorial Mile, a fundraising initiative that gives families a platform to celebrate their loved ones' lives, not just mourn their loss. The event was not only a fundraiser but also a means for families to share their stories and experiences, thus humanizing and honoring the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers.
Krista shares some of the inspiring stories she has encountered throughout her work, introducing listeners to the life-altering narratives of individuals and military families who have shown an immense amount of resilience in the face of adversity.
One such tale revolves around Force Blue, an organization dedicated to the conservation of marine life and the rehabilitation of veterans through diving initiatives. Krista emphasizes the importance of being around warriors who demonstrate compassion and respect, a sentiment that is deeply embedded in the ethos of Force Blue.
As a Gold Star spouse and a key figure in the military community, Krista underscores the necessity of having a support system in place for those who have experienced loss. She highlights the importance of reaching out to these individuals, even years after their loss, demonstrating the enduring need for empathy and connection in the aftermath of grief.
Beyond offering emotional support, Krista discusses the practical aspects of planning for unexpected events. She uses her platform to educate military families on essential preparatory steps such as assigning beneficiaries to bank accounts and creating wills and powers of attorney. She emphasizes the need for individuals to be proactive in ensuring their families are taken care of in the event of their absence.
She also shares her personal experience of hosting a 10-year reunion for her late husband, a retired Green Beret. This personal story serves as a testament to her strength and resilience, as well as the power of community in healing and growth.
Krista reminds listeners to focus on the present and the future. She encourages individuals to ask for help when needed and shares a powerful quote that highlights the beauty of a community coming together. This poignant reminder serves as a call to action for listeners to be mindful of their current circumstances while also preparing for future uncertainties.
