“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes military community who they are.
We — with guests like you — will help the military community not only navigate their finances but also military life. We chat about both good and bad financial practices and provide some insight along the way. We’ll share strategies to help people get ahead, discuss military benefits that members should take advantage of, and more – all working towards the goal of helping people become more financially independent.
On the show, we’ll also preview and talk about how to take advantage of military specific services, such as loans and mortgages, and help members prepare for important milestones such as PCS moves and the transition to civilian life. Finally, at the end of every episode, we have a bit of fun with our Military Minute. That guessing-game segment features military history, hobbies, a bit of pop culture. Correct guesses by listeners could result in a donation to charity of individual’s choice.
In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi sit down with Jason Stout, founder of Stoutreach. Jason shares his inspiring journey of overcoming personal loss through nature-based experiences and how he created a national wilderness program for grieving and at-risk teens. Learn about Stout's various initiatives that guide youth, military families, and adults toward resilience and personal growth. Discover the impact of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the benefits of outdoor education, and how Stoutreach is making transformational experiences accessible to more people.
Stoutreach was born from Jason Stout’s personal journey and extensive background in outdoor education. After facing personal tragedies early in life, Jason found solace and purpose in the natural world. His transformative winter leadership expedition became the catalyst for a national wilderness program that now serves youth, families, corporate groups, and military families navigating stress, trauma, and transitions.
Jason’s work is rooted in the belief that nature-based experiences can drive emotional healing and build long-term resilience. His programs go beyond outdoor recreation; they’re about fostering mental health and personal transformation. From helping teens build confidence to providing space for military spouses and veterans to process their journeys, Stoutreach emphasizes the healing power of the outdoors.
For many military families and service members, engaging in programs like Stoutreach can be a valuable part of the transition to civilian life—a time when both emotional and financial stability are essential.
Although Stoutreach is structured as an LLC, it operates with a mission-driven heart. Jason works tirelessly to make these life-changing experiences financially accessible—securing scholarships and even helping families use 529 college savings plans to cover program costs.
Jason envisions a future where access to nature-based wellness becomes a normal part of health and education—especially within military communities, where resilience and mental health resources are so critical. As Stoutreach expands into more schools and communities, partnerships and funding will remain central to ensuring everyone can benefit from the outdoors, regardless of income or background.
For active-duty military families, veterans, and even military children, the benefits of nature-based healing are deeply relevant—and with the support of the right community and financial tools, more people can gain access.
Jason’s mission is both personal and universal. Through Stoutreach, he has built a supportive, nature-centered community that nurtures growth, resilience, and healing for individuals and families. His passion inspires others to seek renewal in the wilderness and reminds us that healing often begins with connection—to others, to the earth, and to ourselves.
