Ep. 62 – The Shocking Truth About Veterans' Homelessness and How Veterans Villages Is Changing the Game
Tom and Jodi were joined by Dana Spain, who shared the story behind Veterans Villages, an organization dedicated to providing respectful, resilient, and independent housing for veterans in need.
In 2021, Dana founded Veterans Villages, motivated by her experiences with Haven, a transitional shelter for female veterans. Veterans Villages’ first project is the Bernard Spain Campus, a 47-unit new construction multifamily building in Philadelphia, which offers a community atmosphere, outdoor space, supportive programming, and an opportunity for veterans to age in place.
More Than Just Homes for Veterans
Veterans Villages is more than just housing; it’s about creating a sense of community and support. Dana emphasized the importance of providing veterans with a stable environment where they can live independently without fearing homelessness. Through a mix of referrals from other veteran service organizations, the VA, and word of mouth, Veterans Villages ensures a rigorous screening process to select good community members.
Dana shared anecdotes illustrating the broader impact of the initiative, including stories of veterans who, after years of instability, finally found a home to call their own. The organization also prioritizes supportive services, understanding that housing alone isn't enough to prevent backsliding into homelessness.
Challenges and Expansions for Veterans Villages
While the Bernard Spain campus has already made significant strides, Dana highlighted ongoing challenges, especially regarding funding and awareness. Despite the clear need, national funding for such initiatives is often scarce. Dana continues to advocate tirelessly for veterans, enlightening officials and the public about the critical gaps in housing services for veterans.
Veterans Villages isn’t stopping at Philadelphia. Dana discussed their plans to expand to other areas, like rural Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida. Each new village will follow a meticulously planned blueprint, ensuring that it meets the needs of its residents while fitting seamlessly into its community.
Supporting Veterans Villages
Veterans Villages relies heavily on donations from the public and partnerships with various organizations. They maintain a high standard of operational transparency, with 92% of donations directly benefiting veterans. Their website, veteransvillages.org, features an Amazon wish list for specific needs like furniture and appliances, further allowing supporters to contribute in meaningful ways.
Dana's story and the mission of Veterans Villages serve as a powerful reminder of the social responsibility we share to support our veterans.
