Leavenworth-based Armed Forces Bank’s focus on creating educational programming for military clients and their families resulted in it being named as Distinguished Bank of the Year by the U.S. military.
The award recognizes extraordinary contributions toward enhancing the financial well-being and resilience of active members and veterans and supporting the financial stability of military personnel and their families.
“We do a lot on our website, blogs and programs and things like that offering targeted topics that might hit home for a military family that has unique needs,” said Jodi Vickery, executive vice president and director of military consumer lending at Armed Forces Bank. “They move a lot and have expenses tied to that. They have unique cybersecurity needs, and we keep them aware of targeted scams that sadly prey on military families. We continue to add protection to mobile banking. We realize that families are using our online banking to look at their finances together, even if one person is overseas, and we make that easy and secure for them because it’s really easy to get sideways in your finances when you’re not under the same roof.”
Armed Forces Bank offers a lot of assistance related to career transitioning and Veterans Affairs Support, including training programs, a veterans benefit banking program, job search assistance for ex-military and their spouses, and many other services. It helps with VA loans to get military families into homes. It also conducts surveys to learn what issues clients are facing and to better learn about their financial needs.
“Everything we do is about making life easier and better for service members, veterans and their families, no matter where they’re stationed,” said Tom McLean, senior vice president and regional military executive for Armed Forces Bank. “We believe we are uniquely qualified to do that because 75% of our staff are military-affiliated, meaning they or someone they love has served.”
Kansas City-based Dickinson Financial Corp. owns Armed Forces Bank. Dickinson also owns regional commercial bank Academy Bank.
