Military families face unique financial challenges, from frequent relocations to deployments. Unfortunately, scammers often target service members with deceptive financial schemes. As part of National Consumer Protection Week, we’re sharing essential tips and resources to help military families stay financially secure.
1. VA Benefit Scams — Fraudsters pose as VA representatives offering fake benefits or requesting personal information. Always verify with official VA sources before sharing any details.
2. Advance-Fee Loan Scams — Scammers promise “guaranteed” loans with low interest but require an upfront fee. Legitimate lenders will never ask for money before issuing a loan.
3. Phony Debt Collection — Some debt collectors falsely claim service members owe money and use intimidation tactics. Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) you have rights against unfair debt collection practices.
4. High-Interest Payday Loans — Predatory lenders often target military families with loans carrying extremely high interest rates, known as payday loans. Luckily, the Military Lending Act (MLA) caps interest rates at 36% APR for certain loans.
5. Deployment Rental Scams — Fake landlords offer military-friendly lease deals but disappear after taking the security deposit. Always verify a rental property before making payments!
